How to get ChatGPT to make a website

Key takeaways

  • AI tools help, but they aren’t everything: AI like ChatGPT can assist in website creation, but a solid online presence requires human skills in web development and SEO.
  • ChatGPT needs your input: You must provide detailed instructions and have some technical knowledge; ChatGPT can’t build a website automatically.
  • SEO is a must: To attract traffic, you need a strong SEO strategy; AI tools can help but can’t replace deep SEO knowledge.
  • Iterate and optimise: Constant refinement and optimisation of code and content are necessary to maintain website performance and user experience.
  • AI assists, doesn’t replace: AI tools like ChatGPT are best used as assistants, not substitutes, for expert knowledge and skills in web development and SEO.

An effective website requires more than AI

You might be thinking it’s easy to set up an online business today. Right? After all, we have tools like ChatGPT that can do everything for us. With the click of a few buttons, you can have a ChatGPT website up and running with thousands of visitors.

Unfortunately, you would be wrong. Using AI to automatically build websites will not generate the results you hope for. Building an effective online presence takes time and different skills. From web development to SEO, you need to have a strong understanding of how the online ecosystem works.

However, AI tools can help. In this article, we outline how you can build a website using ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT build a website?

With detailed instructions from you, ChatGPT can build a website. However, it cannot create a website automatically with a few prompts. In this article, we outline the steps and prompts you can use.

However, it is important to note, that building a ChatGPT website still requires good technical knowledge. ChatGPT can make mistakes meaning human intervention is needed. So, if you are not comfortable with code and web hosting, it is not the ideal solution.

Moreover, building a website is only the first step in building an effective online presence. You will also need to understand how search engine optimisation (SEO) works if you want to get online traffic. This requires many steps that are beyond the scope of this article. Therefore, if you want to rank highly in search results, you may need to hire an expert.

How to build a website using ChatGPT

The following steps outline how you can build your ChatGPT website. However, you will need to spend time in each of the steps learning and iterating. Building an effective website is not a straightforward process and using ChatGPT is no exception.

The steps below are intended to be a guide rather than an exhaustive list of instructions. Since each website has different requirements, you may need to perform further research outside of this article.

Moreover, you will need access to ChatGPT 4, the paid version of the platform.  This is because you will need to upload screenshots of websites to build a ChatGPT website. However, the free version – ChatGPT 3.5 – only offers a limited number of screenshot attachments per day. This is not ideal if you want to build many pages. Moreover, version 3.5 is trained on data up to 2021. Therefore, you will not get access to current best practices.

1. Gather inspiration and define requirements

When looking to build a website with ChatGPT, it’s important to find inspiration. This is because, like all forms of AI, ChatGPT requires detailed instructions. During this phase, you need to find websites that reflect:

  • Who you are
  • Your Brand
  • The impression you want to give

Once you have found a website design you like, make a note of it. Through this phase, you should collect:

  • A website design you like. If you like different parts of different websites, that is fine. You can use each of them when creating your ChatGPT website.
  • The colour palette and scheme covering your fonts, background and images. If you are stuck for inspiration look at Google Fonts for the best font type and Coolors for your colour scheme.
  • A site architecture – this includes the pages you want and how they will connect e.g. home, about, blog

2. Plan your search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy and content for each page

Do not skip this step when looking to create a ChatGPT website. While it might be tempting to ask ChatGPT to generate text for you, this will not help you to generate traffic to your website. Instead, it will harm your search rankings.

Instead, you will need to build an effective content marketing strategy. This will include doing keyword analysis and analysing what people in your niche are looking for. This may not be what you think. For instance, as a marketing agency for health brands we analyse vast quantities of online data. In our cold therapies report, we discovered, that interest in cryotherapy has declined by 37.5%. Therefore, if you were in this niche, it would not be a great option to optimise for.

However, it’s important to note that SEO is an ongoing activity. It is complex and requires a deep understanding of how it works. In time you will need to consider other factors such as how to build an effective off-page SEO strategy. Therefore, focus on:

  • Outlining the content for each page
  • What keywords each page will be optimised for
  • Writing the content in preparation for building your ChatGPT website

During this phase, you can use AI tools like ChatGPT as an assistant to help write some of your text. However, you should include your insights and thoughts, while humanising your language.

3. Use ChatGPT to generate code for your website

By now, you should have your text, structure, and design for your ChatGPT website ready. However, since ChatGPT can struggle with processing multiple commands simultaneously, we need to break them up.

Therefore, focus on one section, per page at a time. For instance, your first step might be to create the top section of your home page. Consequently, take a screenshot of that section from a website of your choice and attach it to your ChatGPT chat. You can then use the following prompt:

Prompt to create a ChatGPT website

I have hired you to be my website developer and UX expert. I want to use the image I have attached to create a responsive website using HTML and CSS.

The website is for my company called (insert your company name). My company specialises in (add a description). Here is my logo (insert a link).

This is for the (insert what page this is e.g. home page) and will have a total of (insert number) of sections. This is the (insert number) section. I will provide you with each section in due course.

Please replace the headline with (insert your text). And the text body with (insert your text).

In the attached image there are (insert number) of sections. The sections include (describe the sections in the attached image and how you want them aligned).

You need to include the following image (insert link) into the design.

I would like my text to be in this colour (enter Hex code) and background to be in this colour (enter hex code)

Use this font (insert name and link) in size (insert size). I will be using the CodePen application for copying and pasting the code. Also, please provide a name for each CSS and HTML file.

Do you have any questions before we begin?

4. Refine your ChatGPT website code

You should now test to see if your code works. As per the prompt provided above, you can use CodePen to see if your code works. Moreover, ask yourself if it matches the look and feel you want. If not, go back to ChatGPT and ask it to update your code. However, make sure you are specific about which elements you want changed. For instance, your colour schemes, layout structure, and image placement.

At this point, you may also want to add more functionality. For instance, you may want to have your images sliding in from the left. If so, ask ChatGPT to update the code and then test it again in CodePen.

Once you are happy, ask ChatGPT to create the next section. Once you have all sections completed ask ChatGPT to combine your code and paste it into your code testing tool.

5. Optimise your code

Since you will have gone through several iterations to build one page for your ChatGPT website, your code is likely to be inefficient. This is an issue for SEO. Page speed is an important part of technical SEO and can impact your search rankings. In particular poor mobile page speed. Therefore, once you have built one page, copy and paste it back into ChatGPT and ask it to:

“Please optimise this code and make it efficient. I want my website to be lightning fast.”

Your code should now be more efficient. Therefore, test your ChatGPT website code again.

6. Publish your ChatGPT website

Once you’re happy with your ChatGPT website’s code, you’ll need to use a website hosting service to make it live on the internet. The best option will depend on your budget and requirements.

For instance, if you are a running apparel company you may anticipate a high volume of users. Moreover, your website will have different features such as a payment page and checkout page. These features can slow down your website. Therefore, spending money on a good web hosting plan with a lot of bandwidth is important.

On the other hand, if your website is for a local health shop that doesn’t sell online, you may not need an expensive plan.

Once you have your web host, you will need to “export” your files from CodePen and follow your web host’s instructions to upload your ChatGPT website code file.

A ChatGPT website still reguires SEO

Will my ChatGPT website work?

If you follow the steps above, you can get a fully functioning website up and running. However, that doesn’t mean it will generate hundreds of thousands of website visitors – if any at all.

Firstly, great web development requires a lot of skill and experience. While it is possible to set up a website, it doesn’t mean it has been built to the best standards. This is critical to understand. A high-performing website can impact your search rankings and user experience. While ChatGPT can build a website, without the proper technical knowledge it may not help you drive results.

Secondly, building a website is just the first step to online visibility. You will also need to understand how SEO works and ensure you are constantly updating your website to generate traffic.

AI tools like ChatGPT have transformed human capabilities. However, we need to remember they are best used as tools to assist us rather than a replacement for knowledge.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT copy a website?

ChatGPT does not have access to the underlying code of a website. Therefore, it cannot copy a website exactly. However, by providing it with prompts and images of a chosen website it can create code that resembles another website.

Can ChatGPT rewrite my website?

ChatGPT cannot rewrite your website automatically. From a code perspective, you can ask ChatGPT to analyse your existing code and provide recommendations. However, you will then need to manually update the code after.

From a content perspective, the story is similar. You can ask ChatGPT to optimise the content you have, but it cannot visit your website and do it without your input.

Can we design a website using ChatGPT?

Yes, it is possible to design a website using ChatGPT. However, you will still need to give ChatGPT detailed instructions. Moreover, web design is a skilled occupation. Therefore, while ChatGPT may design elements of your website based on your instructions it may not offer the best advice. For instance, user experience (UX) design requires a deep understanding of how your customers will navigate and digest information. Unfortunately, ChatGPT does not have a detailed understanding of your customer base and their online behaviours.
